Certified Copies of Death

Information effective Sept. 18, 2023

Certified Copies of Death

  • The certified copies should be received within approximately five to seven business days after the death certificate is signed by the physician or coroner/medical examiner. Note: Weekends or holidays may cause a delay.
  • The funeral home can order additional copies up to 90 days from the date of the initial order and these will be received in two to three days. Cost is $20.00/each.
  • After the 90-day period, the copies will be ordered from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and will be received by the funeral home in 7 to 10 business days. Note: the US Postal Service may cause a delay.

Military

There is no cost for a deceased veteran. There is no cost for a spouse of a veteran, as long as the veteran is surviving. The veteran's DD214 is required. 

Up to 10 certified copies can be ordered at no cost. The copies should be received within 10 to 12 business days. Note: the US Postal may cause a delay.

 

Option of Standard or Comprehensive Certified Copies

Standard copies do not list medical information, such as the cause(s) and manner of death but do include medical certifier’s name and address.  These can be used to conduct business when the cause and manner of death is not a concern, such as, 

 

  • Property Deed(s)

  • Banks and Credit Unions

  • Mortgage Companies and Lenders

  • Pension Providers, one copy per provider

  • Will and Estate

  • Credit Card and Merchant Companies

  • Private Retirement Plans

  • Stocks and bonds

  • Mineral Rights


Comprehensive copies
list the cause(s), manner of death and medical certifier’s name and address. These most likely would be required for,

  • Life Insurance, one copy per company

  • Veterans Administration

  • Family Records

Copies may be needed for Social Security and auto title(s) transfer.
